Saffron, the most expensive spice in the world, is the stigma and style from the center of a crocus sativus (saffron crocus). The stigmas and styles can only be harvested by hand, and there is a very small amount of saffron in each flower. Every gram of saffron is the result of 150 harvested flowers. Just as a small amount of saffron requires large amounts of land and man hours to cultivate, only a small amount of saffron is needed in a dish. In fact, one gram of saffron can be used dozens of times before running out.
The Spanish Coupe Grade Saffron is widely recognized as the highest quality saffron from the top country of origin. It is used to make medicine to treat ailments such as asthma, insomnia, cancer, depression, Alzheimer's disease, pain, heartburn, and dry skin.
Saffron is used in dishes around the world, including Milanese risotto in Italy, paella in Spain, bouillabaisse in France, and biryani and jasmine rice in Southeast Asia. Just one or two threads will be enough to sufficiently flavor a meal for four.
