Garam Masala (India)

While most curry powders tell the tale of English colonization and interpretation of local cuisines, garam masala is one of the true traditional Indian blends. Garam, or hot in Hindi, and masala, meaning mixture of spices, is a combination of north Indian spices that are used to heat up a dish. Different from a curry in both ingredients and use, garam masala is added to a dish as its finishing touch. Rich with flavors such as pepper, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and cumin create a flavorful blend that will take your dish from good to extraordinary. This spice adds a warming, sweetening flavor to meats, fishes, and vegetables as well as soups and stews.
